Tip 1: Dispose of the evidence
This is step one in pulling off the illusion. Nobody needs to know you didn’t simmer that curry for hours or roll every last meatball by hand. Pop the empty packaging straight into the outside bin or recycling before anyone catches a glimpse. Out of sight, out of mind.
Tip 2: Use your own trays, bowls and dishes
Presentation is half the battle. Slide that lasagne into your own baking dish before it goes in the oven, or get the curry simmering in your stainless-steel pot. It’ll look better and be an excellent excuse to get out the good serving ware. No one will be any the wiser.
Tip 3: Add fresh vegetables, herbs and garnishes
A scattering of fresh parsley, a few basil leaves, a drizzle of olive oil are the small touches that make dinner look like it’s your very own masterpiece. Toss a bag of rocket into your roast veggie salad or add a handful of your favourite veg into tonight's Sri Lankan chicken curry and the evidence of your hard work will disguise any extra help you had along the way.
Tip 4: Present your meal in an unexpected way
This is where you can really have fun. Elevate dinner beyond the plate by piling biryani into a beautiful clay pot or cut zucchini slice into little canapé squares for pre-dinner drinks. And if it’s Christmas pudding? Go all out and light it on fire (safely, of course). Here’s how.
