Our Food
The Dinner Ladies are Katherine Westwood and Sophie Gilliatt. We live to eat and love to cook. Between us we have seven children and two husbands of varying sizes, appetites and degrees of fussiness.
We started this business partly to feed some needy, time-poor friends but mainly so that we would always have good food in our own fridges and freezers that could be quickly prepared after netball, football, school or work.
We cook as we have always done for our families: using great ingredients and taking no short cuts. We make everything from scratch: every stock, curry paste, sauce and pastry. We even grind our own spices from whole. None of our dinners contains anything your grandmother wouldn’t have recognised (as long as she was a well-travelled and adventurous grandmother who knew her tamarind from her turmeric).
We rely on wonderful suppliers: our friendly local butcher, Lucas Meats, John Velluti, who delivers all our fruit and veg at an ungodly hour from Flemington Markets, Thirlmere Poultry, who bring us beautiful free-range poultry directly from their farm, and James and Darrin at the Two Providores.
Our influences come from all over the world, from great chefs and street food, as well as home cooking learned from our mothers. What matters to us is that our food is honest, authentic and full of flavour. Good food, lovingly prepared, is always good for you.
